SEO (Search Engine Optimization) involves a collection of techniques that enable your URL to come to the top of the search engine results for certain specific keywords. Follow these simple techniques to improve the pagerank of the pages in your website.
- Identify the keywords you want to target. This is the most critical part of your business. Understand what your customers are using to find you. Let us say you run a web development house, your keywords could be “wordpress administration”, “web development” and “PHP development”. Once you brainstorm some of the target words, check if there are enough searchers searching that. Use this keyword tool to do this research.
- Target one primary keyword per page, with 2-3 secondary keywords. Don’t target more than 4 keywords or you will risk diluting your focus.
- Use the keywords in your title and url. Google and Bing give more important to your page’s title (that appears in the browser’s heading) and the url than your content. Let us say, you have the url: www.webdevelopment.com/wordpress-administration with the page title, “Wordpress Administration” you have a high probablity of getting high on SERP (Search Engine Result Pages) for web development and wordpress administraton.
- Keep the title under 60-70 characters. Your title must be informative to both humans and search engine and use common sense. Just as you wouldn’t have a title that is 500 characters long for your book title, you wouldn’t want to go long for your page title.
- Separate multiple keywords in the title with pipe symbol (|) and use the high priority keywords first. For example, your title could be “Awesome Software Inc | Web development | WordPress | Social Media Engagement”.
- Page title of each page in your website needs to be unique. Think of the different pages in your website as chapters in your book. Would you want to have multiple chapters in your book reading with the same title.
- Use <h1> HTML tag for the page title and other heading tags for important headings. Use one h1 tag per article preferably at the top and a couple of h2 tags for the subheadings.
- Maintain appropriate keyword density in the content. Don’t assume SEO involves just giving your content to a machine. If you want to sustain a good page rank you need to have a lot of quality back links and visitors. To do that you need to write content that is interesting. And keep the keywords to an optimum level – neither to high nor too low.
- When you create internal links use appropriate anchor text. For example, this article could be linked from another article with an anchor text “Search Engine Optimization (SEO) tips”.
- Use Alt text in your images so that search engine can understand the image and can help it come at the top in google image search and other places.
