That time of year has finally come around again, Apple has unveiled the latest in their iPhone line-up, the iPhone 5, and it’s the most spectacular looking iPhone yet. It’s been a year since the iPhone 4S was released, and the iPhone 5 seems to of come a long way from the 4S. In this article we’re going to take a look at the iPhone 5, what changes and what new features it brings us.
Before we get started, there’s a great video here which shows you the new iPhone 5, it’s design, and an overview of it’s features and specification – courtesy of CNET. So, watch the hands-on video of the iPhone 5 below:
As you can see from the video, the iPhone 5 has brought us quite a number of changes on the iPhone 4S, starting with the design. The iPhone 5 keeps much of the iPhone 4S design qualities, but has been improved; the iPhone 5 has a taller body, and is 18% slimmer than the 4S. The width of the iPhone 5 is the same as the 4S, so it’s just taller and slimmer – and it weights a bit less than the 4S too!
The iPhone 5 is made from a uni-body case, and the backplate is now no longer glass, instead it’s metallic material with a fraction of glass at the top and bottom (to allow the antenna to communicate). I hope the metallic material doesn’t scratch as easily as some of the metal materials we have had on Apple devices in the past – like the old iPod Nano.
A couple of things you might not of noticed from the video include the smaller dock connector (which is now all digital, and much quicker than the old connector), and the relocation of the headphone jack from the top to the bottom.
iOS 6 was released last night too, this is the firmware which comes pre-loaded on the iPhone 5 and comes with some great changes in itself. SiRi is now much more powerful and perform tasks in more countries than ever before. iOS 6 also brings a nice new feature to the camera, called panorama – it lets you take a number of photographs and automatically stitches them together into one big panorama picture.
All in all the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 look great, they compliment each other really well and in my opinion it’s definitely the best firmware update and the best iPhone update we have seen yet from Apple.
What do you think? Have you ordered the new iPhone 5? Will you be buying one when it’s released? Share your thoughts on the iPhone 5 in the comments below.
